The world of flights has been cultivated by Tience Sumartini for more than 30 years in Indonesia. Around the year 2010 she began to establish the largest pilot school in Asia . How does this women’s tough lunge in a world commonly cultivated men go?
From the age of 26, Tience was capitalized with courage and high spirits, eager to penetrate the stigma of society. Tience was born in Sukabumi, and was daring to join the community of Sports Flying Sports (Portela) Indonesia and Federation Aero Sport Indonesia (FASI). From the community, Tience with her male-dominated friends hired a private tutor.
“Basically I pursue the pilot’s world for a hobby. So, not a commercial pilot for the airline. But I still have a flight license. Sometimes when I go out of town I fly my own plane. There is a pleasant sensation when we fly and sit in the cockpit room” explains Tience.
Her passion for the aviation world, made Tience interests wrestle her business related activity into air transportation mode. About 8 years ago, Tience opened a pilot school in Bali called Bali International Flight Academy (BIFA). The 7,000m2 school complex is claimed to have the most complete facilities and includes the largest aviation school in Asia.
Remarkably, until now BIFA has graduated over 400 pilots. The alumni, most of whom already work in airlines such as Garuda Indonesia , Citilink, and Air Asia.
Uniquely, BIFA enthusiasts are not only men, but also women. Tience estimates there are more than 20 female pilots who graduate from her academy. That is very exciting for Indonesian women and any aspiring pilots! This should not be a gender-bias industry and Tience’s BIFA academy is giving the opportunity for women to get involved.
