AlphaJWC conducted a tech talk discussing about challenges and solutions in building local tech team last Wednesday (11/10) at Spacemob, Gama Tower. The speakers were engineering specialist in several prominent start-ups including Steve Lewis from Dattabot, Ananto Wibisono from Sepulsa, Angky William from Stoqo, and Garin Prihandono from Sale Stock.
Topic 1: Understanding local tech team culture and language
Ananto started the discussion by explaining the development of local tech team in Indonesia. Nowadays, things get better because engineers need to complete the task that is assigned by project manager only. They can do specific role with various tech language. However, some challenges still remain because most of the engineers don’t want to understand business and have unstructured work style. He stated that the solution is to promote collaborative approach within the team. Moreover, the most important thing to keep these engineers happy is by giving them value and chances to grow.
Topic 2: Investing in your engineering productivity
In this session, Garin started the talk by explaining the success behind Sale Stock. Sale Stock, online shopping platform for women’s items, is the SEA’s first company to launch a chatbot that can handle end-to-end transaction on Facebook’s Messenger Platform. They have several strategies to make sure the system can be effectively executed. It includes dividing their engineers into different layers, conducting core test execution, feature gating and so on.
Topic 3: Setting up local tech team with Amazon lens
Angky opened the topic by telling his work experience with Amazon. He emphasized that to transform our local tech people to have the same working value is by promoting critical thinking and leadership. It is better for an engineer to mastering one language rather than knowing a bunch of language without depth.
Topic 4: Managing tech team process in Silicon Valley way
Steve began by explaining the current trend in Silicon Valley. It’s all about lean startup process, cloud native architecture and services, blockchain, and leveraging AI. That is also what he’s trying to implement in Dattabot by adopting lean start up, enhancing agile scrum, and implementing MBO process.
The event was closed by an interesting question: “Can we build world-class tech company in Indonesia?” The answer is yes. However, they were all agreed that we need more financial incentive to create the ecosystem more interesting for young talents.
