On last Friday, 31st August 2018 Vivian and Meredith from ANGIN got a chance to attend the panel discussion and launch of State Of Southeast Asian Tech Report, presented by Slush Singapore and Monk’s Hill Ventures in GoWork Chubb Square, Jakarta. This report provides a broad overview of the Southeast Asian (SEA) tech ecosystem: what makes it tick, work and grow.
The insights were gathered earlier this year through a survey. Respondents included entrepreneurs, investors, startup executives and other key players in the SEA tech startup ecosystem. Some elaborated on their views during one-on-one interviews. Taken together, the information portrayed a vibrant yet complex SEA tech startup landscape.
This panel discussion was moderated by Michael Lints, Partner at Golden Gate Ventures, with Michele Daoud Principal of Monk’s Hill Ventures, Vanessa Hendriadi Li CEO & Co-Founder of GoWork, Tanisha Banaszczyk Senior Investment Associate Convergence Ventures, and Ellen Nio Associate Patamar Capital.
During the panel, one interesting point that was discussed was about the importance of the quality of startup founder plays an important role in investor decision-making process. “In the end, the business models can be changed but the founder reminds the same”, added Ellen Nio from Patamar Capital. She also emphasized that a startup founder and team composition is a very crucial part, that’s why it’s important to have background and reference check before deciding to invest in someone.
At the end of the panel, the panelist also mentioned several attractions of Indonesia as one of the potential countries in the startup ecosystem. Besides the huge market potential, they also find the behavior of Indonesian people who like to try new things compared to other countries as the opportunities for business to expand their operation in Indonesia.
