Organized by Tech in Asia, ILO (International Labour Organization) which is also a specialized agency of the United Nations held a meetup event on the 19th of June in Hotel Indonesia Kempinski, Jakarta. The main topic of the event was Empowering Female Youth Through ICT Skills. Representative from ANGIN who attended the event was Novi Juwita (Business Development Associate).
The session started with an introduction from the Country Director of ILO Indonesia, Michiko Miyamoto, on the assessment made on ICT skills demand in Indonesia & ILO’s collaboration project with BBPLK (Balai Besar Pelatihan Kejuruan) Bekasi. The collaboration project seeks to increase the rate of female youth employment in regards to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) field by providing training courses on Information and Communications Technology (ICT) for young women who have not started working. It was also made clear by Miyamoto that women are 20% more likely than men to lose their jobs due to automation, which is why this empowerment through ICT skills training is necessary.
On the next session were presentations and Q&A sessions from respective guest speakers Maya Juwita (Executive Director of IBCWE), discussing the importance of having women in ICT sector and Annisa Dwi Baehaki (Head of Talent Strategy from Bukalapak), on the management of tech-stars in the highly diverse talent pool. In summary of both discussions, while not obvious, professional gender bias is still strong in Indonesia thus trainings or movements should be implemented to minimize such bias or stereotype, e.g. Bukalapak’s movement for #menerobosstereotype (Breaking the stereotype). Another conclusion was that diversification from gender equality can help lay out more perspectives for the company.
The last part of the event before the networking session was the Focus Group Discussion where attendees grouped up based on their chosen topic and raised individual or/and company’s point of view in terms of challenges, opportunities & what kind of solution can the respective company offer. One of the topics discussed was Digital & Distance Learning of which despite the many challenges, the opportunities were more significant as it aligns with life-long learning & efficient in terms of time, cost, even accessibility.
This event was well-attended, bringing new insight through the information and experiences shared by ILO’s team, guest speakers & other attendees. ANGIN look forward to engage with ILO on various possible collaborations in the future & to follow-up on its upcoming events.
