In partnership with Bank Indonesia Maluku Province and Inpex Masela, ANGIN is working on a program to develop Batlolonar and Larsasam Tanimbar tenun. Tenun Tanimbar is a traditional woven fabric which has cultural significance for generations in addition to its unique and distinctive beauty. In this program, the development program focuses on the weavers of Batlolonar and Larsasam community in Amdasa Village, Yamdena island, Tanimbar, Maluku. This project is aiming to develop tenun Tanimbar as a commodity, increase the economic income of the Tanimbar weavers, create relevant and sustainable market access, activating local youth, and establish marketing tools.
Gregoria Mandias, Impact Associate of ANGIN as The Project Lead
Far away from Jakarta, Gregoria Mandias went to Tanimbar, South Maluku to lead the project. Prior joining ANGIN, Gregoria develop her expertise in developing tenun commodities by creating a social enterprise named Copa de Flores, working with weavers in East Nusa Tenggara. In executing the project, Gregoria also work with Ichwan, Impact Associate of ANGIN who has experience in addressing unemployment in Papua area through Kitong Bisa enterprise.
ANGIN’s Scope of Work in This Project
Based on the goals, objectives and indicators of the program, ANGIN try to achieve the aim of this project through several activities, including:
Tenun Tanimbar Value Chain Mapping
This mapping will be done through explorative qualitative research method based on market access mainly to map the products, potential products, and industry infrastructure including material availability, manufacturing costs and selling prices, production capacity, and cultural significance. This activity will also map the ability of the weavers, market access & marketing networks, mapping of industry players’ business skills along with their knowledge of infrastructure, health, and welfare.
Development of Tanimbar Weaving Infrastructure
This method of development will be responsive following the on-ground findings after the mapping is done. The findings can be applied to develop handmade looms, improvement of home facilities, the addition of direct facilities related to revenue growth, market access, and creation of marketing kits.
Weaver and Local Youth Training
Training will be carried out using the live in method and intensive guidance where the trainer team provides direct guidance day by day at Saumlaki. Training progress is recorded as evidence of capacity building in a tangible, measurable and quantitative way. The training in development will include technical training in using handmade looms, developing derivative products, and business skills training.
Spotlight and Exhibition
The creation of stories as campaign tools and exhibition to advocate the development of tenun Tanimbar’s industry. The story will be carried out by a journalistic method and written with popular essay style to convey the journey of entrepreneurship development process.
