B Corp Forum 2019 – Dare to Care: Using Business as a Force for Good

On December 5, 2019 ANGIN’s Advisory Officer Olyvia Samosir attended B Corp Forum 2019  at Graha Niaga Thamrin, Central Jakarta. After being successfully held for the first time in 2018, this annual forum invited more than 200 participants from various entities, such as government agencies, startups, private companies, students, and also social entrepreneurs. This forum aimed to go beyond raising stakeholders’ awareness to implement sustainable business practices to create a healthier environment for consumers and society.

The event was opened by a panel on Consumers’ Expectations to the Socially Impactful Business. The panelists were Jochanan Senf from Ben and Jerry, Karyanto Wibowo from Danone, Soeprapto Tan from Ipsos Indonesia and Kai Paul Stober from Indosole, with Cilla from Innate Motion as the moderator.

The speakers had the same vision: to become enterprises that actively contribute to social welfare development. Karyanto Wibowo encouraged companies to be a certified B Corp. He explained that being a B Corp was a manifestation of our dual commitment and guideline for improvement in economic and social progress. He further added that a B Corp could be used as a measurement tool of impact and it could create a great sense of responsibility and pride from employees.

The second panel was on Starting Business with Purposes, with Jalal from CSR Activist, Adi Reza from Mycotech, Irfan Helmy from Anomali, Wouter van der Kolk from Youvit Indonesia as speakers.
Each speaker showcased their businesses and how the business had a purpose on delivering social impact not only to customers but also shareholders (e.g. farmers).

The morning session was closed by Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti from BAPPENAS. She expressed her appreciation towards enterprises that are willing and/or have become certified B Corps. Amalia also emphasized that Indonesia has now aligned its action plans with SDGs 2030. She encouraged aspiring social entrepreneurs and business companies to integrate the SDGs value to their business plans.
