JICA Japan and ANGIN Indonesia had launched the NINJA Accelerator program which is a program intended for Indonesian startups working to reduce carbon emission. As the implementing partner, ANGIN is pleased to invite you to attend the Demo Day or have in person meetings as we are bringing three selected startups to Tokyo, Japan!

This year’s NINJA program selected start-ups in Indonesia in green transformation and natural environment conservation areas to be supported and matched with local, regional, Japanese, and global investors. These 3 Indonesian startups are: Automa Supply Chain, Kepul, and Parongpong RAW Lab.

Parongpong RAW Lab aims to address marine plastic debris by recycling ghost nets, benefiting the environment, and providing extra income for local fishermen. The prototiles reduce material weight by 90%, lower costs by ⅙ per m2, and minimize carbon footprints while boosting local content (TKDN), this makes Parongpong RAW Lab leading the charge in transforming waste into eco-friendly, high-quality building materials for a green future.

Supporting Indonesian impactful companies, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in collaboration with ANGIN, launched the NINJA (Next Innovation with Japan) Accelerator Program 2024 in Indonesia. The program empowers the chosen companies to expand and establish partnerships across Indonesia and Japan. Automa Supply Chain, Kepul, and Parongpong RAW Lab emerge as the 3 selected Cohorts in revolutionizing green transformation and environment conservation.

Jakarta, Indonesia — Continuing its dedication to driving innovation and impactful entrepreneurship in its fourth year, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has collaborated with ANGIN for the third consecutive year to launch the Next Innovation with Japan (NINJA) Accelerator Program 2024.

The NINJA Accelerator Program represents an exceptional platform for entrepreneurs to scale their ventures and broaden their impact. This highly selective initiative is crafted to support business growth, foster partnerships in Indonesia and Japan, secure crucial financial support, and build essential networks. The program will facilitate tailored mentorship and guidance on impact report creation, equipping companies with essential data to strengthen their positioning with investors and access to meet investors, corporates, and other related stakeholders through Demo Days in Jakarta and Japan, fostering impactful companies-investor connections.

“This year, we are focusing on eco-friendly and carbon-neutral initiatives. JICA believes it is essential to protect Indonesia’s beautiful natural environment while utilizing it effectively, with the necessary measures for climate change mitigation and adaptation.” said Ms. Sachiko Takeda, Chief Representative of JICA Indonesia Office, remarked in her speech.

Showcased Their Innovation, 10 Shortlisted Companies Shone at the Pitching Session

Over the course of an intensive selection process lasting less than a month, a thorough review was conducted with an impressive pool of 264 applicants. Following this rigorous screening, the 10 shortlisted companies— Automa Supply Chain, Bantubumi, CIROES, IJO, Karmabumi, KEPUL, Parongpong RAW Lab, SMEs Pack, Terra Water Indonesia, and Venambak—earned the chance to participate in the pitching sessions. Held offline on 18th of November 2024 at the E-DISC (ERIA Digital Innovation And Sustainable Economy Centre) in Central Jakarta. The event commenced with opening remarks delivered by David Soukhasing, Managing Director of ANGIN, and Sachiko Takeda, Chief Representative of JICA Indonesia Office. These dynamic sessions were filled with energy and innovation, marking an exciting milestone for these ventures to present their groundbreaking ideas and entrepreneurial vision. We were honored to have distinguished judges, including Sachiko Takeda, Chief Representative of JICA Indonesia Office, Nozomu Ono, Senior Representatives of JICA Indonesia Office, and Yoji Hiramatsu, Project Formulation Advisor of JICA Indonesia Office, as well as David Soukhasing, Managing Director of ANGIN, and Atika Benedikta, Investment Director of ANGIN.

As the final selection phase of the JICA NINJA Accelerator Program 2024, JICA and ANGIN were thrilled to host this pitching session, spotlighting companies ranging from pre-seed to pre-series A stage that offers innovative solutions in green transformation, natural environment conservation, and sustainable water management. With the pitching phase successfully concluded, we are proud to present Automa Supply Chain, Kepul, and Parongpong RAW Lab! These visionary entrepreneurs have excelled through the selection process and are poised to reshape the future of green transformation and environment conservation.

NINJA Presents 3 Cohorts to Kickstart a New Chapter Towards Green Transformation and Environmental Conservation

We are excited to embark on this transformative journey with these exceptional companies, witnessing their rapid growth and seamless integration into the dynamic ecosystem. Their journey will begin with tailored mentoring sessions covering 5 areas: Business, Fundraising, Japan Business Culture, Pitch Coaching, and Impact Assessment, set to kick off in December 2024. This preparation will lead up to the eagerly awaited Demo day in Jakarta and Japan in February 2025. The impact entrepreneurial landscape in Indonesia has emerged as a dynamic force and a vital contributor to the nation’s GDP and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Entrepreneurs form the backbone of this vibrant ecosystem, driving innovation, employment, and economic growth.

These organizations enhance the country’s economic landscape and foster a culture of creativity and resilience. Thankfully, these entrepreneurs are not alone on their journey. They receive support from various organizations assisting in numerous forms, such as knowledge, capital, and market access.

When ANGIN started back in 2012, this support ecosystem was very small. Since then, it has evolved significantly, becoming more complex and dynamic, with players constantly entering and exiting, driven by new backers, evolving missions, and their ability to remain relevant in this market.

At ANGIN, our goal is to bring clarity and solutions to this vibrant yet intricate ecosystem. Recognizing the need for a comprehensive mapping, we have embarked on a new mission to identify, understand, and highlight the leading organizations, initiatives, programs, and activities supporting the impact and social entrepreneurial ecosystem.

Through this report, we aim to provide a clear and detailed map of the entrepreneurial landscape, showcasing the initiatives that are driving change and innovation. By doing so, we hope to enhance collaboration, streamline efforts, and ultimately contribute to the growth and development of Indonesia’s entrepreneurial ecosystem.

Report Overview

This report zooms in on some of the key players supporting the startup ecosystem in Indonesia that also contribute in paving the way for impact technology startups to grow. Highlighting the work from investors to service providers, these key players in the ecosystem are building the foundation for startups to make a positive impact through tech-enabled solutions.

This report use the term “impact” in a broader scope. Not only social enterprises deliver “impact” (i.e. achieve positive social and environmental impact through the business). “Impact” can be a vague concept and while social enterprises intentionally state that they are pursuing “impact” and have the duty to measure it. Some of these players that may be working in Impact Areas also contribute to achieving “impact” without stating it openly or with a capacity to measure it.

Parakerja

Muhammad Rezki Achyana founded Parakerja to create employment opportunities for people with disabilities in various sectors. The online platform offers a hiring portal tailored for persons with disabilities, alongside providing Indonesian Sign Language courses and translation services. Achyana, a dedicated advocate for inclusion, also serves as a country representative for Indonesia’s Special Education Network and Inclusion Association. He leverages his influence on TikTok to raise awareness about the importance of inclusivity. Last year, Parakerja was selected for an accelerator program supported by Japan’s development agency JICA. Liberty Society

Tamara Dewi Gondo Soerijo co-founded Liberty Society to empower marginalized women, particularly refugees from the Middle East and Africa residing in Indonesia. Liberty Society runs workshops that teach artisans to create products from recycled materials, which are then sold to corporations. Their upcycled goods, including tote bags and corporate gifts, have been embraced by companies like Samsung and AXA Indonesia. Surplus

Muhammad Agung Saputra and his co-founders launched Surplus in 2021 with the mission to tackle food waste in Indonesia. Their app connects major food suppliers, including hotels, malls, and farmers, with consumers to sell excess food at reduced prices. Surplus has successfully attracted major clients like Marriott International and Jakarta’s Mall Sarinah, extending its services to Greater Jakarta, Bandung, and Bali. HearMe - Bayer Women Empowerment Award 2024

The Bayer Foundation Women Empowerment Award (WEA), powered by Impact Hub Network, is a vibrant celebration of women entrepreneurs leading innovative change. This award goes beyond mere recognition; it is a dedication to support women pioneering in health, nutrition and related climate-smart solutions.

HearMe is one out of fifteen global female leaders who had the honor to receive this recognition.

Hear Me

Athalia Mutiara Laksmi, CEO of HearMe shared to ANGIN that the inspiration for Hear Me, which focuses on accessibility, came about by chance. One day, she met a deaf online taxi driver who shared his struggles with communication, which often led to poor reviews. This encounter inspired the creation of Hear Me, aiming to raise awareness about sign language and communication barriers.

HearMe is the first Indonesian Sign Language Translator with a 3D animation display to give information access and bridge the communication between the Deaf and the non-Deaf (Hearing). NINJA (Next Innovation with Japan) by JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency) is a highly selective program designed to empower impactful Indonesian startups. WiNNER Competition 2023 Impact Reports

We are proud to launch the impact reports of four WiNNER Cohorts today! After months of intensive learning and connecting among impactful social enterprises from diverse backgrounds, we are pleased to say that WiNNER this year has been nothing but impressive and intriguing. We are so excited to showcase them on our platform as they have demonstrated excellence and dedication to making the lives of Indonesians better.

This is the fourth part of ANGIN’s 16 Impact report launch. Last week, we announced the Impact/ESG Fellowship Impact Reports. Check out last week’s newsletter if you missed it! We are launching impact reports every Monday in May with one more launch to go next week! So be sure to tune in and check your mailbox regularly!

WiNNER (Wirausaha Social untuk Negeri)

WiNNER (Wirausaha Sosial untuk Negeri/Social Entrepreneurship for the Nation) is a collaboration between the Ministry of Administrative and Bureaucratic Reform (KEMENPANRB) and USAID Indonesia through USAID ERAT, which connects social enterprises with local governments and key stakeholders, fostering an ecosystem aimed at enhancing Indonesia’s public services. At its core, WiNNER seeks to address pressing social issues by facilitating the convergence of social entrepreneurs and governmental bodies. By leveraging this synergy, the program aims to catalyze impactful solutions to the multifaceted challenges facing Indonesian communities.

The framework of WiNNER is intricately designed to empower social enterprises operating within the realms of seven priority topics, ranging from poverty reduction, to education and health. It empowers them to actively contribute to the enhancement of public services. This dynamic engagement spans across six provinces within Indonesia, providing participating social enterprises with a platform to showcase their innovative approaches and address critical societal concerns. Ultimately, this strengthens the efficacy and reach of public services within the designated provinces, such as:

1. Banten
2. East Nusa Tenggara (NTT)
3. East Java
4. South Sulawesi
5. West Kalimantan
6. North Sumatra

Eureka Xpert

In the age of digitalisation and the proliferation of technology in various sectors, it is paramount for everyone to know how to navigate the digital world. Eureka Xpert recognises the importance of being digitally literate, causing them to develop programmes to empower Indonesians, creating awareness of using digital tools among Indonesians. By catering to the various age demographics in Indonesia, such as upskilling professional workers and designing courses to teach the older generation, it ensures that no Indonesian is left behind in the digital world. Fammi

Fammi was founded on the premise of democratising affordable psychological interventions and educating families on the early detection of child behavioural issues. Realising that the vast number of Indonesians are unable to send their children for psychological treatment due to the exorbitant cost of interventional therapy, Fammi aims to resolve this issue by connecting trained and experienced psychologists to families, allowing families to seek professional help for their children. Nyalanesia

Nyalanesia provides broad access to literacy programs and skills development opportunities for both students and teachers throughout Indonesia. WeCare.id

WeCare.id was founded on the premise that healthcare is becoming increasingly unaffordable to the masses in Indonesia, causing most Indonesians to be deprived of basic medical treatment. With such a vast disparity in the access of healthcare in Indonesia, WeCare.id aims to tackle this burgeoning issue by digitalising healthcare. Additionally, WeCare.id also collaborates with schools and medical institutions, allowing stakeholders to identify vulnerable groups in Indonesia, thus allowing them to tackle healthcare accessibility issues in a more holistic manner. Together with United Nations ESCAP supported by Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, ANGIN is an implementer for the upcoming Impact Harvest Forum, scheduled to take place on the 23rd and 24th of May in Bangkok, Thailand at the United Nations Conference Centre. This prestigious event aims to address the critical role of the private sector in achieving the commitments of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The Impact Harvest Forum will focus on inclusive businesses, recognizing their potential to drive both commercial viability and social impact, particularly for those at the base of the economic pyramid. With an expected attendance of 150 participants, including business leaders, impact investors, government agencies, financial institutions, development partners, and inclusive business facilitators, this forum presents a unique opportunity to identify investment opportunities and financing mechanisms to support the growth and impact of inclusive businesses in the region.
