Introduction

Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), in collaboration with ANGIN, has once again reinforced its commitment to fostering Indonesia’s innovative early-stage companies through the NINJA (Next Innovation with Japan) Indonesia Accelerator Program 2024. On February 13th and 14th, 2025, they successfully hosted the Alumni Day and Demo Day in Jakarta, marking a significant milestone in helping impactful Indonesian startups scale and expand their global reach. Following this, from February 16th to 22nd, 2025, a business trip was organized, including a Demo Day in Japan on February 19th, where the startups had the opportunity to present their innovations to a global audience.

The 3 Indonesian early-stage companies selected as NINJA 2024 Cohort are: Automa Supply Chain, Kepul, and Parongpong RAW Lab, providing solutions in green transformation and environment conservation.

As the program reached its peak with the Demo Day events in Jakarta and Japan, these early-stage companies showcased their innovative solutions and engaged with investors and partners, paving the way for a sustainable future.

Not only that, with the completion of the NINJA Indonesia Accelerator 2024 program, impact reports have now been released for each of them. Read them all now on the impact report section!

What's NINJA Accelerator Program?

Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), in collaboration with ANGIN, is excited to strengthen Indonesia’s entrepreneurial ecosystem through Next Innovation with Japan (NINJA) accelerator program 2024. This highly selective program aims to empower impactful Indonesian companies to build business partnership in Japan, achieve financial support, and connect with curated investors for invaluable networking opportunities.

What Has Happened?

For the past 3 months, the 3 selected early-stage companies have been going through a curated selection process with the other 264 applicants. Their journey has begun with tailored mentoring sessions covering 5 areas: Business mentoring by Katrina Too, Cynthia Salim, and Erdinc Ekinci; Fundraising guidance from David Soukhasing, Atika Benedikta, and Sven Milder; Impact mentoring led by Lishia Erza; Japan Business Culture insight from Mariko Asmara, Pitch Coaching by Selaksa team from November 2024 to early February 2025.

JICA believes it is crucial to protect Indonesia’s beautiful natural environment while using it sustainably, alongside implementing effective measures for climate change mitigation and adaptation. Taking the necessary actions to mitigate climate change is urgent, and startups have a key role to play in driving this transformation through innovative solutions.”

Parongpong RAW Lab

Parongpong RAW Lab is revolutionizing construction with sustainable Ja~la! Prototiles, made from repurposed abandoned fishing nets (ghost nets). Parongpong RAW Lab aims to address marine plastic debris by recycling ghost nets, benefiting the environment, and providing extra income for local fishermen. The prototiles reduce material weight by 90%, lower costs by ⅙ per m2, and minimize carbon footprints while boosting local content (TKDN), this makes Parongpong RAW Lab leading the charge in transforming waste into eco-friendly, high-quality building materials for a green future.

NINJA Alumni Day:
Sharing Insights to Empower NINJA 2024 Cohorts

This year, NINJA Indonesia is proud to have 9 alumni and 3 cohorts, each bringing innovative ideas to the table. The 2024 cohorts include Automa Supply Chain, Kepul, and Parongpong RAW Lab, all of whom are preparing for the exciting upcoming Demo Day in Jakarta and Japan on February 14th and 19th, 2025. Our alumni include Suar Energi, Sampangan, Fishlog, Bell Living Lab, CarbonEthics,Surplus Indonesia, DoctorTool, Hear Me, and Parakerja, all of whom continue to drive impactful solutions in their industries.
To support NINJA 2024 cohorts’ journey, a special Alumni Day event was held on Thursday, February 13th, 2025, bringing together alumni of NINJA. We were excited to welcome these accomplished alumni, who generously shared their valuable experiences and insights, offering guidance and inspiration to the 2024 cohorts as they prepare for the upcoming Demo Day. This year’s event also involved students from JICA’s SIH (Social Innovator Hub) Program. The SIH students actively shared their experiences and project work, contributing valuable insights and showcasing the next generation of social innovators.

The event was filled with rich discussions, where these alumni offered valuable guidance on refining business strategies, overcoming challenges, and building impactful networks. The presence and contributions of those who did made a significant impact, helping the 2024 cohorts refine their approach and better prepare for the Demo Day stage. With their insights, the NINJA 2024 cohorts gained essential knowledge and confidence, ensuring they are ready to showcase their innovations to a global audience.

Showcased Their Innovation, 3 Indonesian Startups Shone Their Pitching in Demo Day in Jakarta

The following day, on February 14th, 2023, the Demo Day in Jakarta provided a platform for cohorts to present their businesses to a diverse group of investors, including local, regional, Japanese, and global stakeholders. Held at The Hub by Sinar Mas Land in South Jakarta, the event kicked off with an engaging talkshow featuring two key speakers: Elisa Yoshigoe Wijaya, Co-Founder and CCO of DoctorTool, and Juvenco Pelupessy, Principal at Skystar Capital. The session, titled “ESG and Impact in Indonesia: Overrated or Just Undeveloped?”, sparked thoughtful discussions.

With 70 attendees, including investors, partners, government representatives, Indonesian startups, and media, the Demo Day provided a valuable opportunity for NINJA 2024 cohorts to interact closely with attendees. Both sides exchanged valuable feedback on business growth, strategy, and operations, while also exploring potential collaboration opportunities. To cap off the event, there was a networking session where participants could connect and explore business and investment prospects.

NINJA 2024 Demo Day in Japan: Supporting 3 Indonesian Startups in Expanding Globally and Establishing Strong Partnerships

The NINJA team traveled to Japan to connect with partners and investors, aiming to understand the local market. Equipped with a list of potential partners and supported by the NINJA team’s connections, they engaged in 12 productive meetings throughout their trip from February 16th to 22nd, 2025. On February 19th, 2025, in Tokyo, the energy of the startup ecosystem was electric as founders and teams showcased their innovative ideas and solutions to a diverse group of Japanese investors and venture capitalists.
This Demo Day in Japan marks the end phase of the NINJA Indonesia Accelerator Program 2024, providing these early-stage companies with the opportunity to present their businesses to a curated audience of local, regional, Japanese, and global investors. The event began with a warm welcome from Mr. Keiji Katai, Senior Director of Private Partnership and Finance Department at JICA Headquarters.

Christ Panogari Simanjuntak, Partnership and Project Lead at ANGIN also had an opportunity to share about the green landscape in Indonesia, aiming to strengthen the business connections between Japan and Indonesia and create more opportunities for collaboration. During the pitching session, NINJA 2024 Cohorts received in-depth feedback from the audience, helping them understand more about the Japanese market and explore potential collaboration.

As the NINJA Indonesia Accelerator Program 2024 comes to a close, the cohorts—Automa Supply Chain, Kepul, and Parongpong RAW Lab—have successfully showcased their innovative solutions after a journey filled with tailored mentoring and showcasing opportunities. Continued with the business trip to Japan, they were fully supported in connecting with potential investors and partners through in-person meetings. Some of the most valuable in-person meetings included discussions with investors and partners, as well as visits to the Indonesian Embassy and BKPM in Tokyo.

JICA Indonesia and ANGIN Indonesia had launched the NINJA Indonesia Accelerator Program 2024 which is a program intended for Indonesian startups working to reduce carbon emission. As the implementing partner, ANGIN is pleased to invite you to attend the Demo Day or have in person meetings as we are bringing three selected startups to Tokyo, Japan!

This year’s NINJA program selected start-ups in Indonesia in green transformation and natural environment conservation areas to be supported and matched with local, regional, Japanese, and global investors. These 3 Indonesian startups are: Automa Supply Chain, Kepul, and Parongpong RAW Lab.

Automa Supply Chain, Kepul, and Parongpong RAW Lab emerge as the 3 selected Cohorts in revolutionizing green transformation and environment conservation.

Jakarta, Indonesia — Continuing its dedication to driving innovation and impactful entrepreneurship in its fourth year, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has collaborated with ANGIN for the third consecutive year to launch the Next Innovation with Japan (NINJA) Accelerator Program 2024.

The NINJA Accelerator Program represents an exceptional platform for entrepreneurs to scale their ventures and broaden their impact. This highly selective initiative is crafted to support business growth, foster partnerships in Indonesia and Japan, secure crucial financial support, and build essential networks. The program will facilitate tailored mentorship and guidance on impact report creation, equipping companies with essential data to strengthen their positioning with investors and access to meet investors, corporates, and other related stakeholders through Demo Days in Jakarta and Japan, fostering impactful companies-investor connections.

Showcased Their Innovation, 10 Shortlisted Companies Shone at the Pitching Session

Over the course of an intensive selection process lasting less than a month, a thorough review was conducted with an impressive pool of 264 applicants. Following this rigorous screening, the 10 shortlisted companies— Automa Supply Chain, Bantubumi, CIROES, IJO, Karmabumi, KEPUL, Parongpong RAW Lab, SMEs Pack, Terra Water Indonesia, and Venambak—earned the chance to participate in the pitching sessions. Held offline on 18th of November 2024 at the E-DISC (ERIA Digital Innovation And Sustainable Economy Centre) in Central Jakarta. The event commenced with opening remarks delivered by David Soukhasing, Managing Director of ANGIN, and Sachiko Takeda, Chief Representative of JICA Indonesia Office. These dynamic sessions were filled with energy and innovation, marking an exciting milestone for these ventures to present their groundbreaking ideas and entrepreneurial vision. We were honored to have distinguished judges, including Sachiko Takeda, Chief Representative of JICA Indonesia Office, Nozomu Ono, Senior Representatives of JICA Indonesia Office, and Yoji Hiramatsu, Project Formulation Advisor of JICA Indonesia Office, as well as David Soukhasing, Managing Director of ANGIN, and Atika Benedikta, Investment Director of ANGIN.

As the final selection phase of the JICA NINJA Accelerator Program 2024, JICA and ANGIN were thrilled to host this pitching session, spotlighting companies ranging from pre-seed to pre-series A stage that offers innovative solutions in green transformation, natural environment conservation, and sustainable water management. With the pitching phase successfully concluded, we are proud to present Automa Supply Chain, Kepul, and Parongpong RAW Lab! These visionary entrepreneurs have excelled through the selection process and are poised to reshape the future of green transformation and environment conservation.

What Challenges Does Skilvul Group Address in Digital Education for Indonesians?

Skilvul Group is established to solve a perennial problem in Indonesia: the barriers that many Indonesians face in accessing digital capabilities, contributing to a persistent skills mismatch.

This perennial problem has existed because of a confluence of factors such as the lack of outdated digital knowledge in formal education, lack of high-quality ICT skills in the Indonesian workforce, and the unequal access to digital skills development, impeded by socioeconomic and geographical barriers. Athalia Mutiara Laksmi, CEO of HearMe shared to ANGIN that the inspiration for Hear Me, which focuses on accessibility, came about by chance. One day, she met a deaf online taxi driver who shared his struggles with communication, which often led to poor reviews. This encounter inspired the creation of Hear Me, aiming to raise awareness about sign language and communication barriers.

HearMe is the first Indonesian Sign Language Translator with a 3D animation display to give information access and bridge the communication between the Deaf and the non-Deaf (Hearing). We are proud to launch the impact reports of four WiNNER Cohorts today! After months of intensive learning and connecting among impactful social enterprises from diverse backgrounds, we are pleased to say that WiNNER this year has been nothing but impressive and intriguing. We are so excited to showcase them on our platform as they have demonstrated excellence and dedication to making the lives of Indonesians better.

This is the fourth part of ANGIN’s 16 Impact report launch. Last week, we announced the Impact/ESG Fellowship Impact Reports. Check out last week’s newsletter if you missed it! WiNNER (Wirausaha Social untuk Negeri)

WiNNER (Wirausaha Sosial untuk Negeri/Social Entrepreneurship for the Nation) is a collaboration between the Ministry of Administrative and Bureaucratic Reform (KEMENPANRB) and USAID Indonesia through USAID ERAT, which connects social enterprises with local governments and key stakeholders, fostering an ecosystem aimed at enhancing Indonesia’s public services. At its core, WiNNER seeks to address pressing social issues by facilitating the convergence of social entrepreneurs and governmental bodies. By leveraging this synergy, the program aims to catalyze impactful solutions to the multifaceted challenges facing Indonesian communities.

The framework of WiNNER is intricately designed to empower social enterprises operating within the realms of seven priority topics, ranging from poverty reduction, to education and health. It empowers them to actively contribute to the enhancement of public services. This dynamic engagement spans across six provinces within Indonesia, providing participating social enterprises with a platform to showcase their innovative approaches and address critical societal concerns. Ultimately, this strengthens the efficacy and reach of public services within the designated provinces, such as:

2. East Nusa Tenggara (NTT)
3. East Java
4. South Sulawesi
5. West Kalimantan
6. North Sumatra

Eureka Xpert

In the age of digitalisation and the proliferation of technology in various sectors, it is paramount for everyone to know how to navigate the digital world. Eureka Xpert recognises the importance of being digitally literate, causing them to develop programmes to empower Indonesians, creating awareness of using digital tools among Indonesians. By catering to the various age demographics in Indonesia, such as upskilling professional workers and designing courses to teach the older generation, it ensures that no Indonesian is left behind in the digital world. Fammi

Fammi was founded on the premise of democratising affordable psychological interventions and educating families on the early detection of child behavioural issues. Realising that the vast number of Indonesians are unable to send their children for psychological treatment due to the exorbitant cost of interventional therapy, Fammi aims to resolve this issue by connecting trained and experienced psychologists to families, allowing families to seek professional help for their children. For the second consecutive year, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and ANGIN as the implementing partner proudly announce the successful culmination of the NINJA Accelerator 2023. After months of intensive learning and connecting among impactful startups from diverse backgrounds, DoctorTool, HearMe and Parakerja went on to take the stage in Jakarta and Tokyo spotlighting their growth, skills and businesses in hopes of finding capital or finding the perfect partner to take them to the next level. What's NINJA Accelerator Program?

NINJA (Next Innovation with Japan) is a highly selective program designed to empower impactful Indonesian startups. In partnership with ANGIN, this initiative provides selected startups in health, disability, education, social security, nutrition, gender and poverty reduction sectors with access to curated investor networks, expanded partnership opportunities, and financial support from local, regional, Japanese, and global investors.

How it Started

Having open application in November 2023, there were 255 applicants from all over Indonesia. A numerous number had fantastic innovation, ideas and impact. It was tough to find the top 10 let alone 3 to say the least. But after careful deliberation at the top 10 pitching, it was DoctorTool, Hear Me and Parakerja who rose to the occasion.

DoctorTool

DoctorTool developed a SaaS solution in healthcare (clinic information management system) that enables digital transformation to health clinics, moving them from manual paper-based to cloud-based operations. Additionally, they have cutting-edge IoMT (Internet of Medical Things) technology that brings convergence between hardware and software in the medical world. Their mission is aligned with the national digital transformation (both under the Ministry of Health and National Insurance), where they focus on underserved markets, the primary care clinics who serve Indonesian patients under the National Health System. Hear Me

Staying Connected at Alumni Day

This year, with the aim of creating a vibrant ecosystem of collaboration and growth leading up to demo day, NINJA hosted its first-ever Alumni Day to celebrate the achievements of past cohorts and facilitate knowledge-sharing and networking opportunities.

The event, held Tuesday, 27th February 2024, featured an intimate fireside chat with the successful alumni. Participants had the invaluable opportunity to exchange insights, experiences, and best practices to give additional insights about Japan for the current 2023 NINJA cohorts before they participate in the NINJA Demo Day Jakarta and Demo Day Japan (Tokyo), further fuelling their entrepreneurial endeavors. By uniting all the cohorts, it created an open conversation with the combined insights of the 9 startups – Fishlog, Plepah and Sampangan (2021), Bell Living Labs, CarbonEthics and Surplus (2022) and DoctorTool, HearMe and Parakerja (2023). The event culminated in a networking session where alumni had the chance to forge new connections, explore potential collaborations, and reignite old friendships.

Demo Day - Excitement and Opportunity

The Jakarta Demo Day, which took place on 1st March, brought together over 50 mentors, investors, and potential partners, marking a significant milestone for the cohorts. The cohorts showcased their innovative solutions to pressing challenges and showing opportunities in health and disability sectors, highlighting the transformative potential of technology and entrepreneurship in driving sustainable development.

Japan Trip and Demo Day in Tokyo

The NINJA team embarked to Japan to connect with partners and investors to grasp the Japanese landscape. Prepared with a wishlist of potential partners and investors and the connections of the NINJA team which proved to be fruitful and insightful, a total of 14 meetings were engaged over the course of the Japan trip from 3-9th March 2024. On the 5th March in Tokyo, the vibrant energy of the startup ecosystem was palpable as the founders and teams presented their cutting-edge ideas and solutions at the heart of Southeast Asia’s burgeoning innovation hub to a wide range of Japanese investors and Venture Capitals.

Commenting on the event in Tokyo, Ms. Yasuyo Okumoto, senior director of JICA’s Economic Development Department remarked, “The NINJA Accelerator Demo Day 2024 exemplifies the spirit of collaboration and innovation that lies at the heart of JICA’s mission. We are incredibly proud of the remarkable achievements of our entrepreneurs and their potential to drive positive change in society.”

Both demo days provided a platform for the startups to connect with potential investors, mentors, and strategic partners, fostering new collaborations and opportunities for growth. Through pitch sessions, networking events, and additional tailored meetings with potential investors & strategic partners, participants engaged in meaningful exchanges aimed at accelerating the scaling of their ventures.

As the world continues to navigate unprecedented challenges, events like the NINJA Accelerator Demo Day serve as beacons of hope, illustrating the power of innovation to address complex global issues and create a brighter future for all.
