Indonesia Impact Ecosystem Mapping 2024: Report by ANGIN

This new report is brought to you by ANGIN

Introduction

The impact entrepreneurial landscape in Indonesia has emerged as a dynamic force and a vital contributor to the nation’s GDP and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Entrepreneurs form the backbone of this vibrant ecosystem, driving innovation, employment, and economic growth.

These organizations enhance the country’s economic landscape and foster a culture of creativity and resilience. Thankfully, these entrepreneurs are not alone on their journey. They receive support from various organizations assisting in numerous forms, such as knowledge, capital, and market access.

When ANGIN started back in 2012, this support ecosystem was very small. Since then, it has evolved significantly, becoming more complex and dynamic, with players constantly entering and exiting, driven by new backers, evolving missions, and their ability to remain relevant in this market.

At ANGIN, our goal is to bring clarity and solutions to this vibrant yet intricate ecosystem. Recognizing the need for a comprehensive mapping, we have embarked on a new mission to identify, understand, and highlight the leading organizations, initiatives, programs, and activities supporting the impact and social entrepreneurial ecosystem.

Through this report, we aim to provide a clear and detailed map of the entrepreneurial landscape, showcasing the initiatives that are driving change and innovation. By doing so, we hope to enhance collaboration, streamline efforts, and ultimately contribute to the growth and development of Indonesia’s entrepreneurial ecosystem.

Report Overview

This report zooms in on some of the key players supporting the startup ecosystem in Indonesia that also contribute in paving the way for impact technology startups to grow. Highlighting the work from investors to service providers, these key players in the ecosystem are building the foundation for startups to make a positive impact through tech-enabled solutions.

This report use the term “impact” in a broader scope. Not only social enterprises deliver “impact” (i.e. achieve positive social and environmental impact through the business). “Impact” can be a vague concept and while social enterprises intentionally state that they are pursuing “impact” and have the duty to measure it. Some of these players that may be working in Impact Areas also contribute to achieving “impact” without stating it openly or with a capacity to measure it.

Disclaimer:
This report has been meticulously crafted by a dedicated team at ANGIN. It encapsulates the subjective viewpoints and insights of our team, honed through extensive interactions and continuous observations over the past years. The report delves into critical themes surrounding Indonesia’s social entrepreneurship and impact investment ecosystem, intending to serve as a foundational reference for enhancing understanding in this space. While we may not have included every prominent contributor and influential organizations, our primary goal is to highlight the stakeholders we believe to be the most actively engaged participants in the 2024 ecosystem.

Investors Insight Dinner Hosted by ANGIN and Indigo Telkom

Introduction

Indigo, Telkom Indonesia’s innovation incubator, recently hosted the Indigo Telkom Investors Insight Dinner, an exclusive event aimed at fostering connections between innovative startups and potential investors. This dinner, held at a prestigious venue, brought together a select group of entrepreneurs, senior investors, and industry leaders to discuss the future of technology and investment opportunities within the Indonesian startup ecosystem. Asides startups pitching there was also a notable presentation by Donald Wihardja, CEO of MDI Ventures on the topic of “How to Drive High-Value Synergies for VC’s and Startups”.

Growth and Scale: How to Drive High-Value Synergies for VCs and Startups

Special presentation delivered by no other than the CEO of MDI Ventures, Donald Wihardja, the chosen topic was Growth and Scale: How to Drive High-Value Synergies for VCs and Startups. Mergers and acquisitions (M&A) and corporate venture capital (CVC) synergies offer unparalleled strategic advantages that can transform businesses. M&A synergies primarily focus on enhancing shareholder value by streamlining costs through shared services, acquiring cutting-edge technology for a competitive edge, securing better supplier pricing, and improving access to capital. Meanwhile, CVC synergies ignite corporate entrepreneurial activities and fuel innovation engines within the company. These synergies allow firms to explore new market niches, facilitate the exchange of valuable know-how, and elevate the core operations of the startups they invest in, fostering a collaborative ecosystem that drives success. Beyond the immediate benefits, leveraging networks and entrepreneurial ventures through CVC investments unlocks both financial and strategic value. For CVCs and parent firms, this means achieving impressive returns on investment, expanding market reach, gaining access to groundbreaking technologies, and leveraging existing services for enhanced innovation. Startups, on the other hand, receive crucial support in raising capital, bolstering their reputation, obtaining management advice, and accessing large-scale projects. These partnerships not only accelerate growth but also optimize resource utilization, mitigate risks, and align strategic goals, creating robust market credibility and a formidable competitive edge. In essence, synergy partnerships are the cornerstone of long-term growth and innovation, driving both startups and established companies toward a brighter, more successful future.

Pillars Of Collaboration

Investors Insight Dinner was designed to achieve several key objectives:

1. Showcase Innovation: We wanted to highlight the groundbreaking startups supported by Indigo. These startups span various sectors, including fintech, green supply chain and HRIS demonstrating the diversity and potential of Indonesian innovation. 2. Foster Investment & Collaboration: Create a conducive environment for investors to connect with promising startups, facilitating potential investment opportunities. The event aimed to bridge the gap between capital and innovation, enabling startups to scale and grow. 3. Networking Opportunities: The Indigo Telkom Investors Insight Dinner provided ample networking opportunities for attendees. Investors had the chance to engage with startup founders, learn more about their projects, and discuss potential collaborations. These interactions were facilitated by a relaxed and elegant dining environment, encouraging meaningful conversations and connections. The main attraction of the evening was the startup showcase segment. Selected startups under Indigo had the opportunity to present their innovative solutions and business models to the audience of handpicked investors from ANGIN’s network. These presentations allowed investors to gain firsthand insight into the potential and uniqueness of each startup.

WeCare.id

WeCare.id was founded on the premise that healthcare is becoming increasingly unaffordable to the masses in Indonesia, causing most Indonesians to be deprived of basic medical treatment. Additionally, WeCare.id also collaborates with schools and medical institutions, allowing stakeholders to identify vulnerable groups in Indonesia, thus allowing them to tackle healthcare accessibility issues in a more holistic manner. Visit their website at https://wecare.id/

Impact Report Creation

To truly showcase the extent of dedication to impact that these startups have, there is no better way than to showcase it through an in depth impact report.

What's NINJA Accelerator Program?

NINJA (Next Innovation with Japan) is a highly selective program designed to empower impactful Indonesian startups. In partnership with ANGIN, this initiative provides selected startups in health, disability, education, social security, nutrition, gender and poverty reduction sectors with access to curated investor networks, expanded partnership opportunities, and financial support from local, regional, Japanese, and global investors.

How it Started

Having open application in November 2023, there were 255 applicants from all over Indonesia. A numerous number had fantastic innovation, ideas and impact. It was tough to find the top 10 let alone 3 to say the least. But after careful deliberation at the top 10 pitching, it was DoctorTool, Hear Me and Parakerja who rose to the occasion.

DoctorTool

DoctorTool developed a SaaS solution in healthcare (clinic information management system) that enables digital transformation to health clinics, moving them from manual paper-based to cloud-based operations. Additionally, they have cutting-edge IoMT (Internet of Medical Things) technology that brings convergence between hardware and software in the medical world. Their mission is aligned with the national digital transformation (both under the Ministry of Health and National Insurance), where they focus on underserved markets, the primary care clinics who serve Indonesian patients under the National Health System. Hear Me

Hear Me is the first Indonesian Sign Language Translator with a 3D animation display to give information access and bridge the communication between the Deaf and the non-Deaf (Hearing). Their vision is to create an inclusive ecosystem and increase the equality rights of people with disabilities. Visit their website at https://hearme.id/

Staying Connected at Alumni Day

This year, with the aim of creating a vibrant ecosystem of collaboration and growth leading up to demo day, NINJA hosted its first-ever Alumni Day to celebrate the achievements of past cohorts and facilitate knowledge-sharing and networking opportunities.

The event, held Tuesday, 27th February 2024, featured an intimate fireside chat with the successful alumni. Participants had the invaluable opportunity to exchange insights, experiences, and best practices to give additional insights about Japan for the current 2023 NINJA cohorts before they participate in the NINJA Demo Day Jakarta and Demo Day Japan (Tokyo), further fuelling their entrepreneurial endeavors. By uniting all the cohorts, it created an open conversation with the combined insights of the 9 startups – Fishlog, Plepah and Sampangan (2021), Bell Living Labs, CarbonEthics and Surplus (2022) and DoctorTool, HearMe and Parakerja (2023). The event culminated in a networking session where alumni had the chance to forge new connections, explore potential collaborations, and reignite old friendships.

Sustainability Professionals in Indonesia: A First Showcase

This new showcase is brought to you by ANGIN.

Introduction

ANGIN team is glad to present to you: “Sustainability Professionals in Indonesia: A First Showcase”!

This showcase highlights 30 key individuals with extensive expertise in sustainability. We emphasize professionals from capital providers, with a further acknowledgment for those who contribute significantly to nurturing Indonesia’s entrepreneurial ecosystem through various ways.

Report Overview

As the Indonesian ESG and sustainability landscape grows, so does the demand for expertise. There is currently a large gap in the demand for sustainability professionals, and the availability of local talents. We are receiving weekly requests from investor clients, partners who are looking to develop their capacity and human resources in sustainability and therefore search for individual key talents to join this effort.

We are proud to always actively contribute in advancing Indonesia’s ESG and Sustainability efforts through impact-related capacity building, maintaining an active network of impact investors, and developing market intelligences regarding sustainability. We witnessed the success of our previous showcase and market landscaping (Checkout our report! : 66 People and Organizations Moving Social Entrepreneurship and Impact Investment in Indonesia ) (Checkout our report! : 40 Women Leaders shaping Gender Lens Investment in Indonesia).

We thought providing, while not exhaustive, a comprehensive list of accredited individuals in the sustainability field would help everyone. Moving towards prompting a bigger interest in sustainability, our objective is to provide a tool where sustainability can grow its recognition.

This showcase is likewise an initial effort to inspire the new generation of workers to join the talent pool of ESG and sustainability. We aim to guide future talents who are interested through the past professional and educational insights of these figures, in hope to mimic their success.

Out of the 30 individuals we have shortlisted, we were able to extract some early learnings. This initial insight likewise prompted another report that will soon be published by ANGIN, regarding the gap between the sustainability job market demand and the readiness of the talent pool in Indonesia, and how improvement in Indonesian higher education can play a part, stay tuned!

This showcase was created by ANGIN team.

Should you believe we overlooked anyone, please submit their details to the link below so we can continue to grow the recognition for sustainability in Indonesia!
